Goodnight Moon Dust Jacket

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, pictures by Clement Hurd. First edition from the Shirley Collection of American Children’s Literature, Beinecke Rare Books Library, Yale University. Published in 1947.

Prior to treatment, this dust jacket suffered numerous tears and losses of paper. The paper along the front cover fold was also cracking and lifting. The tears were previously mended on the verso of the dust jacket using pressure-sensitive tape.

After being gently surface cleaned, the tape carriers were first removed on the verso using a hot tape removal spatula. Any residual adhesive left behind was removed using a crepe eraser; for areas with heavier deposits, a microspatula was very gently used alongside the crepe eraser in adhesive reduction. Tears and losses were first mended on the verso using toned Japanese tissue, providing a stable surface for infill repairs to be carried out on the recto using a toned tissue of equivalent weight to the dust jacket paper. The front cover fold was reinforced on both the recto and verso with toned tissue (the same tissue used on the verso mends) to stabilize the cracked paper.
