The Story of the white house
The Story of the White House by Wayne Whipple. Published in 1910.
This early 20th-c. cloth book was starting to deteriorate, with text-block sections partially or completely detaching, water damage on the pastedowns, and cloth damage at the endcaps of the spine. It was decided that the book needed to be disbound and rebacked with new endpapers added.
The text-block was separated from the case and the original pastedowns completely lifted away (a small book ticket located at the tail of the front pastedown was removed and saved to be later re-adhered). The original spine was trimmed and the boards lifted to accommodate the reback. The text-block, which was originally wire-sewn with staples, was cleaned of its spine linings and resewn on thin tapes. During the sewing, new endpapers with cloth hinges were added to the original text-block. New spine linings of Japanese tissue, sized cloth, and paper were added. A new spine piece was made with 10-point card stock and unbleached linen toned to a color sympathetic to the original cloth color. The boards were aligned and attached to the cloth hinges of the new endpapers. The new spine piece was attached to the boards and the new endpapers were pasted down onto the boards. The original spine was re-adhered to the new spine and the small book ticket was re-adhered onto the new front pastedown.
